Bergenia crassifolia

Big, bold, round glossy leaves, and little spikes of white flowers in the spring, but the real reason to grow this is for the winter foliage, which flushes wonderful shades of red and purple. Absolutely essential once the hostas go dormant and shade gardens can be looking pretty darn sparse. As an added bonus, this thing goes about under the common name of “pig squeak” because if you rub the leaves against each other, they make a loud squeaking noise. Perfect for entertaining small children. And immature adults. Zone 4.
