Elaeagnus 'Quicksilver'

Elaeagnus 'Quicksilver'

Metallic solid silver leaves, 'Quicksilver' lives up to its name, if the knockout foliage were not enough it produces intensely fragrant creamy white flowers. Hinkley calls this zone 4 from which I infer that it is not an Elaeagnus pungens cultivar. Roy Lancaster suggests that it may be a hybrid between Elaeagnus angustifolius and Elaeagnus commutata.

Ephedera americana

Ephedera americana

Ephederas are a strange, unique group of plants. Probably best known as a dietary supplement for weight loss, but is currently illegal for use as a supplement because of the whole problem with people dying. Not to good. But don't let the fact that this is a terrible thing to eat stop you from enjoying the fact that it is a beautiful addition to the garden. Their highly toxic nature makes them absolutely pest proof, even deer and rabbits won't mess with it, and the narrow, upright, green stems makes a beautiful and very different look in the garden. Female plants will produce small, bright orange-red fleshy berry like cones. These plants are unsexed seedlings, so we can't guarantee the sex you'll get. Extraordinarily tolerant of dry, but thrives equally well in wetter conditions, all-in-all a very beautiful, very unique, and entirely bullet-proof plant. Zone 5, maybe colder

Euonymus americanus

Euonymus americanus

Many euonymous have to be planted with care because they're so invasive. Which is why you might consider this Eastern US native instead. Bright green foliage forms a loose shrub to four or five feet, but the best part is the fruits bright red capsules that, when ripe in the fall, split open to expose screaming orange seeds. The effect is bright, garish, and wonderful. In the wild, this is one of the many plants being threatened by deer overpopulation. They adore this plant, and are gobbling many populations down to nothing. So, not the best choice if you have deer problems in your yard, but if you have a deer fence or can otherwise protect this from the four-footed vermine, they could use a safe-haven from the onslaught that is devastating them in the wild. Exochorda x macrantha 'The Bride'

Exochorda x macrantha 'The Bride'

Clonal material, you see a lot of seed grown stuff offered under the name as cuttings are somewhat difficult to root and seed germinates easily. This is the true Lemoine plant named from the 1902 cross of E. korolkowii x E. racemosa, plants are compact, 4-6' (both parents can reach 20') with extremely large pure white flowers in dense racemes. The true plant is still rarely encountered in gardens, despite being easy to grow and extremely showy.
