Trifolium rubens

Trifolium rubens

A gorgeous plant that probably only remains obscure in gardens because of it happens to have the misfortune of sharing a genus with a couple weeds. But a weed this most certainly is not. A bushy perennial a foot or so tall with long stems (totally suitable for cutting) ending in big heads of flowers that are silvery fuzzy in bud before opening up to a vivid shade of magenta-red. None of the weedy characteristics of other clovers, but just as easy to grow. Zone 3.

Trifolium ochroleucon

We tend to think of clovers as pretty little weeds, but this is most certainly not a weed, and though the flowers are unmistakably clover, they are far beyond merely 'pretty.' Each head of blooms is large and a refined shade of pale cream. The plant is a upright perennial between 1 and 2 feet tall, and has a clumping, non-invasive growth habit. Native to the British Isles, should prove hardy.

Tricyrtis rivenii AITW252B

Tricyrtis rivenii AITW252B

An exceptionally beautiful toad lily from high in the mountains of Taiwan, only identified as a species in 2008. We've absolutely fallen in love with it, high on my personal list of the best tricyrtis we grow. Start with the flowers beautifully, delicately colored, and very abundantly produced over a long season in late summer and fall. Better yet, the growth habit is perky and upright, a couple feet tall, and shows no signs of wanting to flop, as some tricyrtis are prone to doing. Another great attribute is that the foliage keeps looking bright and fresh and unblemished right too the end. So many tricyrtis if they dry out at all in the summer get brown leaf edges and look wretched by the time they flower. Not this one it looks perstine and perfect. All of that makes this a species that people really pick up and buy when they see it in person. Any tricyrtis looks great in a catalog on-line with a close up of a flower. This one is great looking no matter how you look at it. Hardy to zone 6 for sure, probably zone 5.

Tricyrtis macrantha ssp macranthopsis 'Juro'

Tricyrtis macrantha ssp macranthopsis 'Juro'

Extremely rare, seldom available and entirely unique, 'Juro' is the double flowered form of this lovely species, one of the very few (perhaps only?) double flowered Tricytis out there. This variety has same trailing growth habit and huge yellow flowers in fall as the straight species, but with an extra dose of petals. Like the species, the trailing growth habit is best appreciated by positioning it somewhere elevated where you can look up at the flowers. Best in shade and resents drying out. Hardy to zone 5, at least. Branches 12-18 inches long.

Tricyrtis macrantha (ssp. macranthopsis)

A trailing species with long tubular yellow flowers speckled on the interior with burgundy, best appreciated trailing down from a high rock wall where you can gaze upward into the interior of the flowers or even in a hanging basket. We normally disdain baskets but could easily make this an exception.- Bob
