Polygonum cuspidatum 'Variegatum' (Fallopia japonica)

Polygonum cuspidatum 'Variegatum' (Fallopia japonica)

Formerly Polygonum cuspidatum, now Fallopia japonica 'Variegata' Japanese knot weed. A big, dramatic, plant 5-6 feet tall, with stems that look like bamboo and frothy masses of tiny white flowers in summer, with leaves splashed liberally with white. The straight species is extremely invasive, and there seem to be two different variegated forms out there, one that is an aggressive spreader, and then this one, which hasn't spread much at all for us. Tough to the point of fault, can take sun to fairly deep shade. Zone 4

Potentilla repens FL PL

Potentilla repens FL PL

Potentilla reptans 'Flora Plena' This is a quite attractive ground cover, only an inch or two high, and in this form, produces abundant fully double little rose-like yellow flowers in early summer. But be warned, this is also an incredibly aggressive weed, spreading indefinitely to the tune of several feet a year. In the right spot, say covering the ground under and around shrubs, or as a no-mow lawn alternative in a difficult site, it is a terrific plant, but it will eat lesser perennials alive in a heart-beat. – Joseph
