Salvia lyrata 'Purple Knockout' PRICE 1@ $6.50

Flat rosettes of luscious purple, a wintergreen perennial native to open woods and sandy clearings in the Southeast, the spikes of flowers are attractive enough.

Salvia microphylla variegata PRICE 1@ $6.50

Salvia scleria turkestanica PRICE 1@ $6.50

Permanent in our gardens via self sowing it is rather short lived with large showy bracts subtending the flowers, it is probably the most asked for salvia in our gardens.

SALVIA TARAXIFOLIA ............. PRICE 1@ $6.50

Cool little thing, it looks like it should have come from one of the Czechs, endemic to the limestones of the Atlas Mts. at altitudes to 2500m. and not closely related to any other Salvia species. It forms little bushlets of citrus scented grayish dandelion foliage, eventually forming wide mats studded with 6” scapes of pinkish cream flowers.

Sanguisorba menziesii ... PRICE 1@ $6.50

A showy species ranging from Washington up to Alaska these are from an Alplains collection, Google it if you need to see pictures.

A European species the Lesser Burnet is common on dry grassland, it is often grown for culinary purposes and is attractive enough for the perennial border.

Sanguisorba officianalis 'Shiro Fururin'     PRICE 1@ $12.00

A rarely available white variegated form that Hinkley brought back form Japan; it has been stable for us although rather slow growing.

Sanguisorba officianalis 'Tanna' PRICE 1@ $6.50

A dwarf form of Great Burnet, the compact 10” mounds of foliage are topped by myriads of burgundy heads on short stems, thanks to Dan for making it available to American gardeners.

Sanguisorba tenuifolia PRICE 1@ $8.00

John from H&H brought us this cool Japanese Sanguisorba (which was supposed to be purple but it is only purple early in the season). I haven’t seen him in a while (new baby and all) but I expect the next time he shows up he will be wearing a think geek “ no I will not fix your computer tee shirt”. It is not like we take advantage of him or anything, I even gave him my ferret eaten cordless mouse; he must have liked it because they named the baby after the ferret, (don’t believe that stuff about old family names) but I digress buy the Sanguisorba if we run out I can always try to beg more.

Santolina chamaecyparissus 'Foxden'            PRICE 1@ $6.50

A compact form that originated with H & H, it is a bit like small ness, it has been a good grower for us and deserves a wider exposure.

Saponaria Bressingham hyb. PRICE 1@ $6.50

Ocymoides x oliviana which is itself a hybrid between S. pumilio and S. caespitosa, its a beautiful cross, produced at Bressingham, one of the best.

Saponaria caespitosa .... PRICE 1@ $6.50

Tight mounds of awl shaped leaves, looks like a robust Silene acaulis, pink flowers on short stems, a favorite of mine.

Saponaria lutea .................. PRICE 1@ $6.50

Yellow is a rare color in Saponaria, and this is a fairly nice alpine species, it would seem to have a lot of potential for plant breeding, a good yellow ocymoides or pulvinaris would be most welcome.

Saponaria ocymoides ...... PRICE 1@ $6.50

Flat mats to several feet across, this does not root down as it creeps, making it easy to lift up and trim back the cushion.

Saponaria officianalis .. PRICE 1@ $6.50

Bouncing Bet, I’m guessing Bet jiggled a bit when she ran, if that image doesn’t entrance you then try watching the sphinx moths that flock to this in the evening. No serious moth and butterfly collector should be without this.

Saponaria pulvinaris 'Red Select' PRICE 1@ $6.50

Grassy leaved dense tufts of foliage, and large deep pink flowers on short stems, horribly confused with pumilio in gardens, these came from Euroseed originally and we picked the best to propagate clonally. 'Red Select' is a fantastic clone forming a tight mat smothered in deep pinkish red flowers, it is one of the most commented on cushions in our tufa beds.

Saponaria pulvinaris 'Light Pink' PRICE 1@ $6.50

A light pink flowered clone we selected from the same seedlot.

Saponaria sp ex PYRENEES Jurasek PRICE 1@ $6.50

These should bloom this year then we will know for sure what they are probably caespitosa or something similar.

Saponaria x boiseri .......... PRICE 1@ $6.50

An excellent plant resulting from the cross of Saponaria caespitosa and Saponaria ocymoides it retains the compact habit of caespitosa and combines it with the abundant large flowers of S. ocymoides

Saponaria X oliviana ....... PRICE 1@ $6.50

Excellent large flowered garden hybrid between caespitosa and pumilio, cutting grown, one of the best Saponarias.

Saponaria x weimanii ....... PRICE 1@ $6.50

One of those mysterious plants that seem to appear on the greenhouse benches from time to time, it looked great so Dick whacked a bunch, if anyone knows the grex and history drop me a note.

Saruma henryi ..................... PRICE 1@ $12.00

A rare Asian Asarum relative it is unique, with felted leaves on upright stems and a long succession of light yellow flowers, strangely most of the recent shade gardening books seem to have ignored it

Satureja montana ............ PRICE 1@ $6.50

Winter Savory, decorative aromatic foliage on neat little dwarf bushes, long grown as a culinary herb as well as for its attractive pale violet flowers.

Satureja spicigera .......... PRICE 1@ $6.50

A strongly aromatic densely tufted plant with compact racemes of showy blue flowers, native to the limestones of the central Caucasus where Mojmir found it at 2000m.

Satureja spinosa ‘thorny horny beast’        PRICE 1@ $5.50

Dick and Brigitta selected the tightest most compact clone we were going to call it ‘Plum Pudding’ but that name was already taken.

Saururus cernuus ............ PRICE 1@ $6.50

Our native Lizard’s Tail is one of only two members of the Saururacaea, the other Asian counterpart being listed in the perennial section, this moisture loving perennial can reach 1.25m in height topped by 30cm long inflorescences that taper like a fragrant white lizards tail. If you don’t already grow it, buy some and get them planted immediately, don’t tempt fate and piss off the lizard god, his wrath should be avoided at all costs, he’s already licking his eyeballs at the prospect of new victims.

Saururus chinensis ....... PRICE 1@ $15.00

The Asian counterpart of our native Lizard’s Tail with spikes of ivory flowers, collecting Asian versions of American natives has become popular of late, (collectors often hold meetings and chant ‘Reunite Gondwanaland’ while shooting into the air with AK-47’s). However, I digress, taxonomically the two are separated by the position of the anthers in chinensis they are held below the stigmas, in cernuus they are held above.

Saxifraga

You will notice a dearth of saxes this year, most of them took a beating this summer and we decided to pull most everything and start over with new cuttings, also we have pretty well saturated the market, if you didn’t get any in the last few years you are s.o.l.

Saxifraga aspera ............... PRICE 1@ $6.50

A white flowering European species in the Trachyphyllum Section, it’s native to the Pyrenees and Alps at altitudes from 1500-2000m. it does not like to dry out but still wants sharp drainage, quite easy compared to some of the others we offer.

Saxifraga cochlearis minor PRICE 1@ $6.50

A tiny little silver Sax with cushions of miniscule close packed lime encrusted rosettes, beautiful clinging to a lump of tufa and much easier then most Kabs.

Saxifraga cotyledon pyramidalis PRICE 1@ $6.50

One of the showiest Silver Saxifrages, rosettes of lime encrusted leaves to 12cm across topped by a 60cm pyramidal inflorescence of white flowers, a spectacular Saxifrage that belongs in every shaded crevice you rock garden has to spare.

Saxifraga cuniifolia ........ PRICE 1@ $6.50

One of only four species in the Section Gymnospora, cuneata like the larger London Pride is an attractive carpeter for a shady rock garden; flowers are white with purple spots on 15cm scapes.

Saxifraga longifolia ...... PRICE 1@ $6.50

The ultimate silver (florulenta doesn't count, I can't grow it) huge monocarpic rosettes that can reach dinner plate size, then they send up a huge spray of flowers and die without offsets; from the Pyrenees.

Saxifraga pan. minutifolia 'Red backed spider'   PRICE 1@ $6.50

It will ensnare you with its charm, however it's quite safe and well behaved, unlike its Australian namesake. Punnett selected this as a chance seedling out of a batch of minutifolia, for the good red color on the undersides of the leaves.

Saxifraga pentadactylus ssp willkommii   PRICE 1@ $6.50

A fairly rare little mossy sax, from 1800m in Spain, Mojmir found these in the Sierra Cantabrica on limestone, ssp willkommii is apparently a lime lover with more compact cushions of aromatic foliage then the straight species, flowers are white in panicles of 5-30 which are produced in the typical mossy fashion.

Saxifraga trifurcata variegata PRICE 1@ $6.50

A nicely variegated form with very thready leaves and an open habit, I think Betty Blake originally gave it to me, the name and details are long forgotten but the plant remains; one of the few mossies that we have kept over the years.

Saxifraga x andrewsii .... PRICE 1@ $6.50

A hybrid between S. paniculata and S. spathularis, it is an attractive easy silver, and grown widely in French cemeteries.
